Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship Program

This fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in Psychosomatic Medicine (Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry). Fellows will have an extremely wide range of experiences in PM, since the fellowship includes training in diverse cutting-edge academic and research centers. Each fellow will have a six month inpatient PM rotation at the National Institute of Mental Health and a six month inpatient PM rotation at the Washington Hospital Center.  The Fellow will spend one day per week at Georgetown University Hospital participating in outpatient PM activities and core didactics.

The NIH Clinical Center is the nation’s leading research hospital.  Fellows will receive clinical training on the NIMH Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service.  Consultations are provided to NIH Clinical Center research subjects participating in a wide variety of clinical protocols (e.g., diagnostic and therapeutic genetics research, bone marrow and solid tissue transplantation, immunotherapy research protocols, and research on HIV/AIDS).  Additionally, the NIMH provides in-depth training in research bioethics (including a lecture series in psychiatric research bioethics, seminars conducted by the Department of Clinical Bioethics, and participation in the Clinical Center Ethics Committee and Bioethics Consultation Service).  Opportunities exist for research projects related to delirium, pediatric PM, decision-making capacity in the research setting, and other questions at the interface of medicine, psychiatry and ethics.  Fellows will train under the direction of Dr. Maryland Pao.

The Washington Hospital Center is a tertiary care academic affiliate of Georgetown located in Northwest DC.  At WHC, fellows will have experience with a wide variety of inpatients, including specialized cardiac, transplant, and oncology populations.  Fellows will train under the direction of Drs. Karen Johnson.

At Georgetown, fellows will rotate in outpatient PM settings, including the Medical Illness Program (our outpatient CL clinic), Psycho-oncology, and Transplant Clinics.  Fellows will also have weekly core didactics and attend departmental Grand Rounds.  Georgetown faculty includes Drs. Steven Epstein, Daniel Hicks, and Carol Alter.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows will be well prepared for the Psychosomatic Medicine board examination and a full range of academic and clinical careers in psychosomatic medicine.
